A lot of things have come out in the cinema recently and shamefully yes, I have been almost every week to see one of the new films. As I have said over and over again … I love films! I still have quite a lot of films that I want to go and see but I thought today I review some of the latest ones that I have seen over the past month. So bit back and enjoy 🙂
Daddy’s Home 2 | ★★★✩✩
I know it’s been a while since this came out but my boyfriend and I went to see it at the beginning of December and I was presently surprised! I have seen the first one and although I thought it was funny, I didn’t think it was the best film I had ever seen. I do love Will Ferrell though … he’s a laugh. Mark Wahlberg is also a great actor too so it was great seeing these starring in this film (they were also in the film ‘The Other Guys’ which is funny as well). I found it weird that the actress who plays the wife of Will Ferrell was Mona in Scooby Doo (the live action films). I couldn’t get my head over that and just kept thinking of Mona every-time I saw her … haha! Anyway, this film was actually really funny and had a good overall message which plays out in the end. The jokes were funny and the characters individually were funny and overall I thought it was a good light hearted film. I do not know if there will be a number 3 … they may have set it up to be a number 3 to introduce the mothers but who knows. If you want to see a light hearted film with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in, then this is the one!
Pitch Perfect 3 | ★★★✩✩
I have to admit, I am a bit of a fan of Pitch Perfect. I thought the first one was great and was so excited by the idea of acapella groups in a film (I liked Glee growing up) and all the music they produced. I love the songs and the idea of the riff-off in the first one however, nothing new really happened in number 2. It didn’t quite have the magic of the first one where all the original cup song and riff-off occurred. However, number 2 was still enjoyable and Hailee Steinfeld who plays the legacy has an incredible voice, so that was a good addition to the cast. I was skeptical when the third instalment of the series came out as I didn’t really know how it would work as the Treblemakers weren’t in it and they had left college. I did enjoy the film, still had some good music numbers and I enjoyed the new bella’s having a go at covering a song but I did think the storyline was a bit weird … especially with the addition of Amy’s dad! I am glad they still had the riff-off though … it’s like their signature thing so I am glad they kept it in however, was anyone else a bit shocked when Fat Amy started doing all that fighting and the action scene. It felt like I had jumped into this action movie like James Bond … ha! I mean the competition with DJ Khaled was okay and that was fine as I guess there needed to be a competition for the film to based around but I thought the thing with Amy’s dad was a bit random and a little bit weird and I couldn’t really see why he would fit into the story! Anyway, that’s just my opinion. It was a great film but just a random storyline (in my opinion).
The Greatest Showman | ★★★★★
Wow! I absolutely loved this film! I love musicals so I wasn’t really sure whether I was going to love this film or find it a bit of disappointment. I was not disappointed! The songs are fab, a know a few people have found them a bit poppy but I think they are great songs and something new to enter the musical world. The storyline is great and the characters I love as each character tries to find their place in society after being hidden away for ages! The song ‘This is me’ … ahh! Keala Settle has an incredible strong powerful voice (plays the bearded lady) and I think the lyrics are so powerful and applicable to so many of us today who don’t feel brave enough to be ourselves. The whole film is based around P.T. Barnum creating the circus and his life around that. I don’t know how much is actually true, it is probably more of a film adapted version, but I don’t mind as I thought the film was excellent and although it may be cheesy, it is a good feeling sort of film. For half the songs, I just wanted to stand up, clap and dance – but obviously I restrained myself as I was in a cinema! Honestly for those of you who are debating to go and see this, I would recommend you go as the sound at the cinema is so amazing and the overall film will probably be better generally on a big screen with intense sound! Also shoutout to Zac Efron for coming out of the jokey, rude comedies and going back into musicals where it all began for him 🙂 His and Zendaya’s song is beautiful! Anyway, go and see it if you haven’t already as it really is a great film!
Jumanji | ★★★★✩
My mum and I went to see this the other day and were both pleasantly surprised. We didn’t really know what to expect as I haven’t seen the old one (but will watch it this week sometime as want to see how the new one compares to the old one). The cast, from the trailer, looked great so I was excited to see how each actor would play their role in the film and let me tell you this, it was a funny film! It was such a laugh with the actors ‘The Rock’, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan as the four main characters in the Jumanji game. Each character was fun to watch and had their comedic moments as well as their serious moments and overall it was just a very enjoyable film. I loved the flirting scene that features Karen Gillan and Jack Black. Also when Jack Black has to pee in the film and obviously she is a girl in real life … hahah! For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about well, their are 4 people playing the game (2 boys and 2 girls) and when they go into the game ‘Jumanji’, the 2 boys come out as 2 dudes then the 2 girls come out as a girl and a boy and so Jack Black character … used to be a girl in the real world so has the brain and mindset of a girl so thats really funny in itself! I would definitely recommend going to see this as it was a fun film and had a great cast as well! I just now need to watch the old one and compare the two.
Hacksaw Ridge | ★★★★★
I know it has been ages since this came out in the cinema but I recently watched it on Netflix so I thought for the final review, I would review this amazing film! The film is based off a true story to begin with which is just incredible. It’s based on the story of Desmond Doss who is a conscientious objector in World War 2, an American pacifist medic who refused to carry a gun or take another mans life. He was also a seventh-day adventist Christian so his faith inspired him to live this way. The film starts by setting up the story of this guy and how when he was younger he nearly killed his bother and from that day he knew he didn’t want to get in that situation again. He joins the army but refuses to ever carry a gun and although he got lots of hate for that, he turned out to be an incredible solider. I don’t know how accurate the film is but there is a scene where all the soldiers are retreating from the ridge as their are too many enemies but Desmond stays behind to help his friend who then dies. He then prays to God asking him what he wants him to do and he hear’s the cries of the dying men. He then stays up there by himself to rescue all these men. Each time he saves one he prays to God to help him save one more. I just couldn’t believe this! The guy in real life ended up saving like 70 men .. thats incredible! I am not really into war films but this film is amazing and inspires me in my own faith to strive to help others. Andrew Garfield is an incredible actor who I believe really captures the essence of this character. Guys, if you haven’t already I would really recommend this film. It is a bit heavy and a bit gory but really does put faith in humanity again 🙂
Anyway, that concludes my film reviews for this month! I hope you enjoyed reading my opinions on the films. I would love to know what films you would recommend and if you have watched any of these, if you have what did you think?
