Making Changes For Third Year

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but building the new” ~ Socrates

As many of you may know, in September I start my last year of University

For my third year of University, I will be living in a studio. This will be a new experience for me as I have never lived alone before but I am looking forward to it and think it will be interesting. In the complex where I will be living, there is a gym. Now I am not a sporty person nor am I a fit person (in terms of health). I have tried going to the gym before in my first year but only lasted about four days before giving up and quitting my membership. When I heard there was a free-of-charge gym in the complex where I would be living, this motivated me to get fit and change my lifestyle for third year to become a healthier and more motivated student.

So in this blog post, I thought I would write down things I am hoping to change about my life next year in the hope that it will inspire me – and maybe some of you – to actually change my fitness and be more motivated.

The first thing I am hoping to improve is my fitness (as mentioned above). To do this, I am hoping to incorporate yoga and gym workouts into my week. I have very little stamina so am hoping to increase this by combining HIIT and circuit workouts together to get my heart rate increased and my body working. I will also do strengthening workouts to strengthen my muscles and help me tone up.

As I am not a gym expert, I am going to get my workouts from the internet to make sure I am doing the most effective workout I can. I will gradually increase the intensity of the workouts as I improve working my way up from beginner workouts because you have to start somewhere. I am planning to go to the gym around 3 times a week (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) although this depends on my timetable.

With the yoga, I hope to do core strengthening, toning and stretching workouts in the morning before I start my day to wake myself up and get ready for the day. I will maybe do this on the days when I am not at the gym. I have not decided yet. I have already found a yoga youtube channel from which I will get my workouts (linked below) and will probably choose a few and then repeat them every week.

The second thing I want to change is my eating. I do not eat particularly badly but I definitely do not eat my five a day! Next year I want to try and incorporate as many of my five a day as I can! I also want to try and eat healthily but still enjoy the sweet treats! I have collected a few recipes that I would like to try along with a few vegan ones that look interesting. I am not vegan but I spent a lot of money last year buying chicken. Four breasts cost me around £5.70 so if I was buying four breasts a month thats around £22 a month on chicken! So I would like to try out a few vegan recipes to try and cut back my spending.

The first recipe I am eager to try is a Chia pudding fruit parfait which you can make three ways depending on what fruit you want to have with it. You can have raspberry and lemon, mango and lime or blackberry and orange.  I really want to try this for breakfast as it looks so yummy and takes very little time to make so perfect if I have a 9am lecture. I also want to try making Jamie Oliver’s vegan burgers and a vegan spaghetti Bolognese (I will leave links to recipes down below). I don’t know how they will turn out as have never had a vegan alternative for burgers or bolognese before, but I really want to give them a try as it’s a lot cheaper and healthier.

However, when it comes to eating my main downfall is snacking! I always seem to snack at University. Every time I go on a food shop I always seem to come back with a bunch of rubbish food. Luckily this time, where I am living I have to do a food delivery so this will hopefully discourage me from ordering unnecessary snack foods keeping my bill low and food shop healthier. I am going to try and find some healthy snacks that I can either make or buy because with fruit I just find it a bit pricy and could easily finish a box of strawberries off in 10 minutes!

As well as the obvious exercising and eating more healthily, I also just generally want to be more motivated with my work, more organised and be on top of my work better than my last two years. This is my final year and I have only one exam which means I have at least 7 pieces of coursework! I really want to be organised and have them done before the due dates and not be worrying about them. Last year as a result of being stressed I got loads of headaches so I am hoping this year if I can be less stressed, I won’t get so many headaches and enjoy third year more! As I will be living by myself, I will hopefully have less distractions which means I can get on with my work and get things done in plenty of time! Especially this year, I will need to find a job for after University so being organised is very important as I will have to write assignments, apply for jobs and attend interviews all at the same time.

All in all, I am hoping that by making these changes to my life they can help me improve my fitness and just help me to have more energy to do things. I am hoping that they will give me more motivation to conquer third year and get through it even when it might be really tough. If any of you are thinking about changing up your lifestyle a little bit, I would totally recommend it. I haven’t even started it yet but I am so excited to give it a try and start something new!
