Finally, a new series has been put on Netflix that I am interested in watching! I needed another series to binge watch so when I heard that the ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ was coming to Netflix I was very excited. It sounded like something that was right up my street. A teenage witch who must choose between the mortal world and the witching world sounds like my kind of series. Although this series was definitely not what I was expecting to be that’s for sure! Also, if you have not seen this series yet or are watching the series currently beware there may be a few spoilers.
I was expecting it to be like a typical teenage school show where Sabrina struggles with being a teenage witch in a mortal world, but it is not! It is quite a dark and twisted series reminding me of Riverdale season 2 when it became dark. Sabrina has many different dark themes such as cannibalism, exorcisms, demons, murder and freaky nightmares.
The story revolves around the teenager Sabrina who is a half-witch but lives in the mortal world within the first two episodes she must give herself over to the Dark Lord on her 16th birthday to become a witch, cutting all ties with the mortal world. However, spoiler, she does not go through with it so is still half witch and half mortal which does not please the Dark Lord. The rest of the series is her trying to outwit the Dark Lord and protect her mortal friends.
It is really good, and I like it because it is different from all the other series on Netflix, however it is dark and at some points quite disturbing. I really enjoyed the different characters such as Sabrina’s two Aunties who obviously love her but are very different from each other with one of them being very loving and sweet and the other rather cold-hearted. You have Sabrina’s boyfriend who is a mortal and her school friends who are all mortal as well. Her cousin is a warlock but punished so is confined to the house; he is a brilliant character and very interesting as well. You have the teacher, Miss Wardwell who we see is not a teacher and works for the Dark Lord. I really like seeing the development of these characters and seeing the relationships between them all grow and change.
The plot line was quite inevitable from the start which is ok, but it was still an enjoyable season as it was interesting to see how the plot line played out. Some episodes were more disturbing, and I do wonder if the feast episode was needed but oh well it was still a good series. I don’t want to say too much as I don’t want to give anything away but episode 10 was good and tied up some loose ends which I enjoyed as some series just leave you on a cliff-hanger which can be really annoying.
I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a slightly darker series and something different from all the other series on Netflix currently. However, if you do get scared easily then maybe leave the lights on whilst watching it as can be a bit freaky. I hope they do a season 2!
I hope you enjoyed this review and let me know if you have seen it or are watching it and what you think, I would love to hear your thoughts.
Have a great week!
